Jessica Garza: Tech Nomad Lifestyle, Her Struggles and More

Sure, sure, I know people rave about the digital nomad lifestyle being all adventure, thrill, and joy. But that's not the whole picture. It's not all sunshine and rainbows. Along with the positives, there are some drawbacks as well.

At this point in my journey, having been a digital nomad for quite some time, I feel it's important to share my own struggles, too. There are definitely downsides to this lifestyle.

If I were to summarize it, I lack a permanent home, often feel financially strained, and don't have a stable circle of friends. These are the challenges I face as a digital nomad.

Constantly on the move, I don't have a traditional home to return to after work. My "home" is wherever I happen to be when I finish for the day, be it a beach, a café, a fancy restaurant, a hotel room, a mountain trail, or a riverside camp. While being in different places can be exciting, it can also be exhausting. Sometimes, I miss having a home base. But this is the path I chose as a tech nomad.

Money is another big issue for digital nomads. Working while traveling, or traveling while working, is a 24/7 gig. There are times when I feel financially insecure. Even with savings or backup funds in my bank account, I often feel broke.

This feeling stems from the places I visit. In new cities, I see people enjoying various activities, dining in fancy restaurants, and exploring the local scene. This triggers a fear of missing out (FOMO) in me. I feel the urge to do the same – to try that activity, buy that item, or eat at that restaurant. After indulging, I'm left with guilt, regret, and a sense of financial loss, which makes me feel broke.

Additionally, maintaining friendships is tough when you're constantly on the move. I don't have a stable group of friends. Any connections I make are fleeting, as I lose them when I move to another city.

Although I've learned to cope with these aspects, it still stings. Sometimes I feel lonely or left out. But on the flip side, I appreciate being away from the noise and hustle of the cities.

In the end, I believe you have to sacrifice something to gain something. My sacrifices have granted me more freedom, peace, and contentment in my life. You just have to keep going and moving forward, like Jessica Garza.
